Therapeutic Tools

My approach to therapy doesn’t quite follow the traditional/biomedical model. I often work with clients that had past negative experiences in therapy or didn't find it that useful.

The approach I offer is integrative as we work in partnership to explore the root causes of the challenges you face, and together we develop strategies for addressing these challenges. I also share tools and skills that will encourage ongoing work and progression, even in between sessions.

I have a straightforward style of feedback and my intention is to help you to understand and process your emotions on a deeper level, to develop healthy coping mechanisms, set healthy boundaries, and reconnect with your essence.

I use a range of modalities based on the service you choose, all aimed in supporting in your journey of personal growth:

Emotional Resilience Counselling

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: In DBT, you'll focus on changing behaviours instead of just exploring thoughts. It's built on CBT principles and highlights four main skills: Mindfulness, which helps you stay aware of the present moment; Interpersonal Effectiveness, including techniques like Nonviolent Communication and Anger Managements skills to improve how you interact with others; Distress Tolerance, which teaches you how to cope during tough times; and Emotion Regulation, helping you manage strong feelings more effectively.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: ACT is a type of therapy that focuses on mindfulness and acceptance of your thoughts and feelings, without judging them. It's designed to help you navigate challenging emotions by redirecting your energy towards healing rather than dwelling on negativity. By encouraging you to stay present and committed to actions that align with your values.

  • Motivational Interviewing: MI empowers you to take charge of your emotional journey by exploring intrinsic motivations and goals, promoting autonomy and decision-making. By exploring your inner motivations, MI helps build resilience and long-term wellbeing, fostering a supportive environment where you can take ownership of your personal growth.

  • Positive Neuroplasticity: These techniques focus on boosting your resilience by amplifying positive experiences and emotions. By concentrating on how your brain can rewire itself in response to positive stimuli, these techniques help foster lasting changes that enhance your overall psychological resilience and wellness.

  • Attachment Theory: In Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we understand that unresolved emotions from your childhood can affect how you relate to others as an adult. By exploring these emotional patterns in a supportive therapy setting, you can gain insight into how your past experiences influence your current relationships. This process helps you heal and grow in your relationships by addressing and understanding the underlying issues that stem from your early life experiences.

Archetypal Counselling

  • Jungian Therapy: It focuses on uncovering universal symbols and patterns within your psyche, known as archetypes as per Carl Jung. By identifying and exploring these archetypal energies through dreams, fantasies, and creative expressions, you gain deeper insights into your personal myths and inner conflicts. It offers a holistic approach to understanding human existence, blending cosmic influences with psychological insights and spiritual teachings.

  • Tzolkin: A sacred calendar used by the ancient Maya civilization in Mesoamerica. It helps you understand your life purpose and the challenges you face by decoding specific archetypes and connecting you with spiritual energies. This calendar allows you to navigate your life cycles with a deeper awareness of your spiritual journey and how you are connected to the universe.

  • Tibetan Astrology: Tibetan astrology blends Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan traditions to offer unique insights. By examining your birth chart based on planetary positions, it reveals insights into potential life paths. This astrological system helps you understand your strengths, challenges, and compatibility with others through elemental analysis (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). Tibetan astrology also integrates spiritual teachings on impermanence, offering a profound perspective on life's challenges.

  • Te Whare Tapa Wha: Based on Māori philosophy, Te Whare Tapa Wha provides a holistic approach by addressing four dimensions of wellbeing: spiritual, physical, mental, and family/social. This framework recognizes how these dimensions are interconnected and impact your overall health and resilience.

Trauma Integration

  • Most counsellors and therapists utilise mainly the “top down” approach, which refers to accessing thoughts to address symptoms of mental health challenges. My line of work though is more inclined with the “bottom up” approach in therapy, to heal symptoms of trauma through memories stored in the body, therefore it is somatic in its nature.

  • My approach to Trauma Integration is informed by Somatic Experiencing, with foundational training in SE Basic Principles directly taught by Peter Levine.

  • Symptoms of trauma—such as anxiety, hypervigilance, aggression, deep sadness, addiction and shame—result from denying the body the opportunity to fully process the traumatic event.

  • Through Somatic Interventions, its primary goal isn’t to help you examine the memories or emotions associated with a traumatic event, but to uncover the bodily sensations linked to those feelings.

  • Rather than just talk about them, I guide you to focus on your underlying physical sensations. From there, the mind-body exercises may include breath work, meditation, visualisation, massage, grounding, dance, and/or sensation awareness work.
